    Default MAAS removes gold wash?

Just got a c-mon for free, the gold wash on the tang looked pretty good. sadly I started to polish it with some MAAS and instead of starting somewhere like close to the pivot started at the shoulder. yep, took it off. ummm...is that normal? what do I use instead? should I just polish it all out then have my jeweler friend get it replated?

    thanks

Well Red, gold wash will come off with just hard rubbing. It is not plating and it will very difficult and expensive to get gold on the blade again. When I'm restoring a blade with gold wash on it, I use a very mild non-abrasive cleaner and I hope it won't come off. Often I find rust under the gold so it is history anyway. C-mon razors are great. They were often the choice of barbers for durability and performance. The price was right.

Grind it off. A mirror finish is more sophisticated and sensual rather than flashy and crude.

I like a nice plain blade, but, does anyone know how to apply a goldwash?

Not 100% sure, but maybe it's a similar process to etching - the stencil is applied to the workpiece and flooded with elctrolyte, then one of the electrodes (the anode?) is composed of gold and is plated out on the workpiece. It must have been a common practice once, and isn't that uncommon now, but it's hard to find any literature on it.

    Regards,
    Neil

Thanks and Merry Christmas Neil. We are still scratching our heads as to the identity of John ?????
    So, it's electro-plating really then?
