Default where to get acrylester, horn, bone

I am wondering if you all could share your knowledge with me? I want to do some scales out of horn and acrylester. I can find it in 5 inch lengths but really need it a little longer for the scales I am doing. I would like it in the 6 to 7 inch range. Does any one know where to get this at? Actually any scale material in that length would be nice. Thanks in advance

    6" slabs of buffalo horn

I have no complaints with the above. The slabs are not perfectly flat, but flattening comes after cutting and shaping if you really need to anyway, so it's all good.

If anyone else has any links for bone and horn slabs that are 5.5"-6" please post here as well. I'd also appreciate it.

I buy my cow bone at the pet store. It is already cleaned and ready to have the scales cut out of it.

I'll bet Masecraft Supply would cut pieces in the lengths you need if you contact them and ask.

Is this the round hollow bone you would buy for a dog to chew? I thought about that but was unsure how to treat and stabalize the bone. I remember reading somewhere that bone should be treated I am assuming against disease. I am wondering if you were to seal it with a ca type sealant or even epoxy resin or maybe even spray clear coat if that would work.

Yep, it is round bone like you would buy for Fido. I have not treated the bone in any way other than dying it some for color. I have used wax to finish the bone. The bone is pretty dry and clean as it comes form the store I do not think that much would grow in it.

If I may ask you what you used to dye the bone and the process used for that if you dont mind sharing the secret? I played around with food coloring on wood scales but when it comes to bone I have no clue. It is a great idea and since I have a rather large dog there would be no waste she would take care of anything left over. She already sits at the bandsaw waiting for wood to fall so she has something to chew on. But I would rather her chew scrap wood than say my cell phone.

I soaked the finished scales in a jar of dye. I used a TransTint type dye dissolved in alcohol. I think most any wood or leather dye would be work ok.

    Default acrylic scale material

I thought I would post to let you all know that I did call MaseCraft and they will cut to whatever dimensions you want. The guy I talked to was very very helpful and did tell me that I may have to buy a little larger than what I need so they are not stuck with an odd size that they can not sell, I totally understand that so I think that is where I will be going to get my stuff. They are even sending me some samples so that I can see what some of the stuff I was interested in works down like. Thank you all for your posts and if there are other sources out there then please send them. I just wanted to let you all know that you can get custom lengths from MaseCraft.
