Thanked: 235Looking for some advice, is this junk or were they made like this?
Hi everyone.
I have just received this Ragg razor from ebay (I was hoping to find something that could be cleaned up and be a good razor) From the ebay pictures I couldn't tell, but once I received it I saw that the blade looks like it is bent. It looks like it has only been ground on one side. The tang is also slightly bent, but I think this is only cosmetic. I would like to find out from anyone who knows more than me were these razors made like this? Could this be damage done by some sort of abuse? And, do you think it could be honed? I'd love to hear your thoughts

Hi,
That's a microtome. It was used for cutting samples to view under a microscope. Most commonly you'll see Puma's like this. I think a few of the guys have had limited success on getting them to shave. They're a similar grind to a japanese blade, so it would be easier to shave someone else than yourself, as they perform better on one side than the other.
Have a look at this, & the linked threads.

If it is bent though, you'll struggle to do anything with it.

Thanked: 235Thanks for the information.
At least the scales and the box are in good condition. I will be able to use them with another razor which has a good blade but chipped scales and a crappy old cardbord box.

Thanked: 235I don't really want to persevere with this one. I'm going to take off the scales and keep the box it came in. If anyone wants the blade just let me know.

Thanked: 77Ummm, if you look at the pic of the blade grind the flat side is at a right angle to the spine and comes straight down from the edge of the spine. I think if you tried to hollow grind the flat side you would end up with an extremely narrow wedge . The existing hollow appears to cross over the center line about half way to the current edge.
Send it to Jimmy. He seems to be happy with his and then he'd have a matched set.Last edited by Quick; 02-10-2009 at 10:00 AM.
