I think he means that the glue on the bottom of the knot could make the diameter at the bottom of the knot about 3mm bigger. That would mean that I need a hole size of 25mm
This is very good as I found a forstner bit set of 15-20-25- and 30mm
I think I will try those bits on some softer wood to find out how deep the hole should be when the knot arives..

what he's saying is that you can drill your hole a bit deeper so that the knot sits further in the handle and the bristles are kind of squeezed at the base of the knot and the loft is lowered. To get the knot further in you need to drill the hole about 3mm bigger so that it will fit with the bristles being squeezed and the glue plug (widens a bit and flares a bit where it joins the bristles).
Oh, Before I forget...whatever you do do not use polyeurethane glue (gorilla etc) to glue in your knot! These glues expand enough to push your knot out and destroy your project. It's extremely hard to apply the downward pressure you need on the bristles to keep the knot seated. Use an epoxy...good luckLast edited by Del1r1um; 02-21-2009 at 05:36 AM. Reason: adding glue info

Today I was doing some DIY work in the garage and I had all the stuff at hand to work on my brush (well except the knot)
So I thought I'd just give it a go. I've never worked with Wenge ut I tell you this stuff it HARD!!!.
So I drilled a 25mm hole in it and filed the edges of with the drill and sanded it a bit.
I was actualy quite pleased with the result.. Depending on the knot I might file some stuff off or drill the whole a bit deeper.. Or I might start over..I dont know yet.. but It will be pretty..

Today I got my knot..
The hole is a couple of mm's too big so I expect that for a 22mm knot I needed a 22mm hole and not a 25mm hole..I probably could get away with it if I fill the hole with epoxy..
Another question I have is how to finish the wood.. I could use cadle wax like I saw in a thread by old_school.

Or maybe another finish..I dont know..

if you drill the hole slightly deeper it should fit fine and some of the loft will be reduced making your brush a bit denser... just an option, the epoxy should work anyway.

I put a wax/oil coat on the wenge but that made the wood completely dark.. I really loved the grain of the wood but with the wax/oil tratment that was almost gone..
So I made a small block to test what it looks like with a candle wax treatment.. That looks a lot better so I'm making a new one and I'll finishe it with candlewax..
I'll post the results as soon as I've finished it..

Its finished!!!
I used it twice now and it is SO MUCH BETTER than the boar brush I have...
I made a new handle.. just a piece of wenge I drilled a 22mm hole with a spade bit as I couldnt find a 22mm forstner bit.. I drilled a 4mm hole first so the spade bit wouldnt wonder off.. that worked just fine. Then I rounded off the edges with a file ( and a sort of file bit on the drill) and sanded it up till 200 grit.. Then I put the thing in melted candle wax and let it sit ther for about 10 minutes..drilled the hole a couple of mm deeper to make sure the epoxy would bond with the wood. glued the knot in.. and there we are..
I did notice that when I rinsed the handle for the first time it got out a lot lighter.. so there was probably some candle wax on the surface thats gone now...

Sorry for bringing back this old thread but:
I still didn't get the 'hole should be 3mm wider' if you drill deeper. Why does that make a difference? So let's say a whole is 26mm wide, and you want to pack the bristles a bit together so decide to drill deeper than usual: you should then drill 29mm wide to fit a 26mm knot? How does that work? I mean, it's still too wide for the knot, or what am I missing?
