Thanked: 0info on the barbers notch and other points
Hi
New guy here. I just started real shaving and I read a lot of the threads but I can't find an answer on how to get the Barbers Notch.
Is made that way or is it a customization thing?
What are the other options you could have for a point and how do they get that way?
I've got a dozen Ebay razors in various conditions so I have plenty to mess around with. I just started my first restoration project. It has a slight frown, discolored blade, and a cracked scale at the bottom pin. I think I ground out the frown and starting to reset the bevel. I'm watching the pinning 101 videos but I think this won't be the last you hear from me.
Thanks guys
Mark

There are a few threads in the razors section about barber's notches. They are more likely to be found on Sheffield blades, but are also on some others. While there are a number of guesses as to its purpose, the suggestion that makes the most sense to me is that the notch is there to make the razor easier to open.
Other common points are square, muted square, spike, round, French, Irish and Spanish. Maybe there are others that I'm forgetting about too. Typically, razors have whatever point they were made with, but they can be altered through grinding/sanding/honing.
