Drilling through steel
I recently purchased this razor. It shaves great, but the tail of the blade is very small. I had the crazy idea of making new scales for it, and drilling a new hole for the pin about a centimeter closer to the blade.
1. Could this work?
2. What would be required to make this work?
I am very new at this, so I would appreciate any feedback you have to offer.

Thanked: 9Don't see why it wouldn't work, i'd just recommend using a drill press and not doing it with a hand drill. Just use a sharp bit and clamp the blade down. Just realize the old hole will be sticking out and that some purists here might get angry...

You'll want to use a cobalt or carbide drill bit and lots of oil at a slow speed. Hardened steel will laugh if you try to drill it with HSS or titanium coated bits.

Yeah, either carbide or ceramic... and if you want a nice looking hole, you need a vice to hold that blade or it will skitter around and/or fracture your cutting tool and/or bugger up the hole and/or cut your fingers up as you push through the other side of the tang.
I guess a dremel might be able to hack through it, but it would be tough to do.

I'd rather have less room on the tail than less room for my thumb. You sure you want to do that? I'd measure and re-measure VERY carefully to make sure it'll be comfortable still.

I'm with Max and Alex. That's a beautiful Greaves! Don't kill it. If you want a little more finger room, design your new scales so that they don't stick out much past the tang when it's in the open position. You could even shape them to broaden the finger rest.

Thanks for all your responses! I definitely am re-thinking this, but still may go through with it. We'll see...
And Max, don't worry, I am still continuing the search for my white whale: a mint condition 6/8 Bengall!!!
