    What would be the easiest way of cleaning this up?

    Take some aluminum foil from your kitchen
    make little ball with it and rub it lightly over the rust spots
    the rust will detach from the steel
    then if you have some dark stains left use some Flitz or Maas or Simichrome

    edit: actually, if you can live with it, just use a scotch pad.
