Lesson Learned (the hard way)
Well I finished restoring this Henry Sears and Son carnival special about 2 weeks ago. Built my first set of scales (which were one piece) tore down the old scales, hand sanded the blade, polished it out and started on it with the hones. I took out a small chip in the blade and got it to a nice edge with my nortons. After that I put it down. I still had plans on polishing it with the 12k stone and taking it to the leather but other things caught my attention.
So last night after some reading about the Chinese 12k hones I was ready to run this blade across it. Before I started I decided to tighten the pins just a little more. Well I guess my hand is a little to heavy with the hammer. After a couple of taps it was getting nice and tight well I thought it needed just a bit more and there went the wood a nice little split right to the end. I should have taken a picture but I was so ****ed that they went right in the trash.
Well today I started another set out of some Bocote I had from another set I am building. This time I will make my pin cuts a little closer and be just a bit softer with the hammer!!!

What kind of hammer did you use?
At least you're capable of making and replacing your own.
