Thread: Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner

Indeed it is.
When I purchased my new heated ultrasonic, after I posted the above message in this thread, I was looking for homemade solutions and came across that on another shaving forum. I haven't tried it but from what I have read it sounds like it works.
Currently, I am looking at some solutions that will aid in razor restorations. I was referred to a solution that removes rust but does not attack or etch Stainless Steel or Carbon. Now the fun part is getting my hands on a razor that is rusted badly for testing. Time to hit the antique shops.

Thanked: 13245Here has always been the underlaying problem so to speak..
About every 6 months these threads come up and we get a multitude of answers and a few wrecked razors...
First if you find something that actually works, and changes rusted, old razors, into shiny and bright, you are a genius and I will buy a gallon to start with
But unfortunately nothing seems to do that so far.. what the real problem is, lays under the rust or "Devil's Spit" as we call that black stuff that just doesn't want to come off... Under there is pitting and that only comes of by taking off steel, so it comes down to even if you could take off the surface stuff, like a Tumbler can do, you still sooner or later need to sand/grind off steel..

Agreed.
Between an ultrasonic and a tumbler they both are really meant for cleaning. Nothing more than just an aid in the restoration process.
I use the ultrasonic for cleaning other things like bicycle parts, small glass bottles and anything else relatively small I want cleaned that would be tedious to do by hand. So, why not try some cool solutions on razors and see what happens.
I doubt it will come out all shiny like you have mentioned but if it does, be careful, those solutions can run $25/qt.

Thanked: 124I have one and it seems to work well getting the gunk out between the scales if you're not planning on unpinning them. It also works well at stripping off any oils that are protecting the blade, so you need to dry and re-oil the tang areas pretty much immediately, or it can rust (I usually have just the scales and tang in with the razor open and the blade out of the solution, so the blade doesnt get cleaned). I wouldn't recommend buying one just for razors, I already had one for other uses, myself.
