    Default vintage blade etching

Does anybody know what the process was for the original manufacturers to etch their names, logos etc on their blades? I assume it was an acid etch of some kind but I am interested in how they did the intricate artwork way back then with no electricity etc. I am getting more and more respect for these guys as I learn more!

I think, and I do not know, but I think that it was probably similar to glass etching.

I have done one or two small pieces and the process is fairly straight forward.
Lay down a masking template apply the acid and viola etching.

Easy to screw up though especially on glass. Some though were not etched some have relief. My Torrey Mayfair is a relief. In other words the word Mayfair and the surround are raised about 1mm off the surface.

    Hi,

It depends. If You mean the etching on the blade, it was acid etching (yes, similar to glass etching), or it was made by hand. (I think before the blade was tempered.)

If you mean the stamp on the tang (manufacturer, etc.) it was stamped before tempering.
