Make a set of light colored scales with embossing, glaze/paint the surface (red in this case), smudge with dark stain and wipe lightly to deposit it near the embossing, then knock the paint off the high spots with sandpaper. Clearcoat when you're done to preserve the look.
It's quite involved and requires a little practice. This technique is used a lot in funiture finishing.Last edited by floppyshoes; 05-18-2009 at 11:49 PM.

The scales look like an imitation of coromandel or bantam, Chinese lacquer, where the lacquer is carved and shaped. You can use layers of shellac or acrylic molding paste to get the same effects. Golden has a great line of paints, glazes and molding paste.

Thanked: 2209Beautiful scales! That is my kind of art work. I wish I had the skills set to make that.
