    Default Brushed Satin Finish

    Hi there...

Does anyone know how to get a nice brushed satin finish as opposed to a mirror finish? Thank you...

Gary (Traveller) gives some advice in this thread. You can also see the effect he achieves. http://straightrazorpalace.com/galle...er-hollow.html
It's important to keep a regular scratch pattern, or it'll look bodged. I suspect that it's a bit of a skill to do really well.

Do you think you need a rotary tool? From what it sounds like from Traveller's post that it might be very difficult.

Maybe you can achieve that look with W/D sand paper as well.

You may shoot Max a quick note. I just had him do a SatinWedge in brushed which came out very nice.

I've achieved similar results in a drill. I made a drum that can be covered in whetever grit if paper i needed. Only thing is, it has to be a perfect circle, & the spindle exactly centred. You won't achieve ai by hand sanding. It'll just look like an unfinished resto as the pattern won't be right.
I matched the drum size to the profile of the grind with this. It'd be easier to get some custom grit flap wheels made i think!

I have tried it with a brass brush and dremel. You just have to be careful to keep the lines straight. Its pretty hard, and to get results like Traveller you are going to need practice. I would try it on an old blade you aren't using before you try it on the razor you are trying to finish.

I use greaseless compounds on a buffer. It's fast and uniform.

I actually got a very nice brushed finish using, oddly enough, a brush. I found that if I loaded a brass wire brush with oil, and put it on a low speed in my rotary, I could achieve a decent matte finish. I will take some practice to get right, but I think I'll be able to get there...
