This week's projects!
If you are a IRC chat person, sorry, you're probably seeing these pics for the 2nd or 3rd time...
Working on a bunch of re-scales this week..and we rarely see in-progress shots (I love it when people post in progress shots) so I figured I'd post a few.
first up is a dubl duck satinwedge that I received last week that had massive cellrot. Included in the lot were 2 other good blades, and it was painful to see these scales go, but, you gotta do what you gotta do -- so I figured I'd attempt to save the inlays.
Here is the before shot:
Here is after I used acetone to remove the inlays:
Then, I used the old scale to trace out a new set using bolivian rosewood. I shaped them to near perfect matches. I had this wipe-on clearcoat lacquer stuff that I bought a long time ago that I decided to try to use on this set. It says you can do 3 coats / day, and it is safe to seal wood, brass, and other metals. Figured it sounded perfect for this. I wiped on one coat, and then tapped down the inlays. Here are some pics after 1st coat:
Since then, I've put on 4 additional coats, and it is sealing up VERY well.
Sooo, between the coats, I've started making some scales for some other razors I had sitting around.
First up: A C-MON Special (Lacewood) and a Shumate (purpleheart). These are mock-ups, so I could determine spacer width. I use microfasteners for mock-ups only.. later they will be pinned. Also, there is NO finish on these! straight off the sandpaper:
I really like the way the lacewood works. its going to be beautiful after I start finishing them.
Then, I did 2 more sets. One is a very basic walnut set thats going on a "Permedge" razor...and they are going to look pretty cool...and then I also tried something wierd with a set of Bubinga scales. The Bubinga scales ended up too small for the razor -- I sanded down a bit too far and they just don't work. I'm going to save them for a small, small razor in the future. So, please excuse the fact that the razor looks out of place on these scales!
Hope you enjoyed my progress report for the week!

That's looking really nice. Are you going to do something with the hollowed lines in the scales?
