Thread: Is it worth it?

I just got this razor from my grandfather. He said it was his father's. It is a superior quality Mason Brand. Two Questions:
1. Is it worth anything? Is mason a good brand in other words?

2. Will I be able to get it restored? It is pretty much black and rusted with some good chips on the edge.

I don't restore but if someone would like a challenge, please let me know.

Being a family heirloom, it might be worth it... to you... to get it restored. For me, it would be awesome to be able to shave with a razor my great grandfather shaved with.

When my grandfather died, my grandma gave me his back scratcher. It is a very cool back scratcher as back scratchers go but it is still a back scratcher. My asshole cousin got Grandpa's Valiant. I could have taken one of his fake legs too but I settled for the backscratcher and assurance I was his favorite. I would have given one of my legs for a razor he got from his old man. I wasn't even offerred the damned car. Grandpa almost killed us in that Valiant on 95 in New Haven when he stopped in the center lane to read the signs at the 91 split. But NOOOoooo, no razor, no car. I got his nasty ol' back scratcher and his plastic F-ing leg, if I wanted it. I suppose now I should have taken the leg. I could have at least made a goddamned lamp out of his F-ing leg.

Your request for pictures is a little ambiguous. Not being sure what you want pictures of, I will do my best. Here is the backscratcher:

It is hand carved bamboo. Notice the quadrupel lead spiral and the three "ball in cage" decorations. I remember when I was a kid it used to have a red silk tassel hanging from the hole at the end of the handle. I think it is a souvenir from the 1939 New York World's Fair. I never actually took one of his legs. However I have made a lamp that looks like an ostrich leg:

It too is hand carved. Admittedly it doean't have quite the impact perhaps a lamp made from a prosthetic leg might have, it has won an award and people do seem to like to talk about it.

In response to your questions, here's my thoughts,

1. Not sure but you could check the Wiki for information on the brand. As it was your Grandfather's, the sentimental value is worth more than what someone would probably pay for it, regardless of the brand.

2. The folks who do restoration work here are top notch! Check the gallery on the forum and you will be able to see some of their work. I've had several restored and can tell you that it is worth it!
