Default Ebay catch- provenence and search for NOS scales

    Hey guys,

I got this one on ebay, paid somewhere mid-50's for it. forgot I bought it till it arrived. I bought it because it looks IDENTICAL to a w&B but different manufacturer. made me curious. etching on blade looks like a w&b I have. but made by John C. ****hill, Sheffield. anybody know anything about them or any idea if this was a contract blade?

Blade is a full 8/8 and a hair over 1/4" thick. nice and heavy. barely hollow ground. it has hone wear but it's even. I think plenty of life left.

This one I'd like to leave patina'd and just get honed. what I'm hoping to find is a set of buffalo scales I can slap on there. I know some of you are sitting on some old stock. not something to shape and all that, just a set that would fit and need to be pinned on. polished up and get to shaving.

if you don't want it seen on here that you have them you can PM me. help appreciated.

***seriouisly mods, its a bit overboard the damn filter. really. how many kids shave with straight razors that we need this filter cranked up to Prude?***

I was watching it, and forgot to bid. Bidding early always causes me to loose. Nice catch, I am sure it will be great.

I want original buffalo horn scales for a lot of my razors.... unfortunately I don't know where to get them. Some of the restorers who don't mind working with it may be able to make you a pair.

Can’t help you with horn scales but… “The Celebrated” was etched on a few other brands… Torrey comes to mind.
But that razor looks exactly like a W&B for barbers use… can’t make it out but does it have the star and cross on the tang?
W&B usually have the “upturned pony tail” (that’s my best description).

no, it doesn't have those marque stamp thingies that the w&b's have. I'm just thinking, the technology they had back in the day. not like there were font packages. just guessing they must have either shared plates or done blade sfor other people. (not just w&b).

I know I can have osmebody make me the scales, but I'm trying to save money on this one. budget blade this one. :-) I'll just have to make some scales for it myself I guess.

Maybe the same die maker made forging dies for the butcher too, or an X W&B employee found a job at John Coxhill...
