Thanked: 43Is the blade Blue there on and around the chip or is that the lighting?
If it's blue, its been overheated, and you have your work cut out for you. You'll have to move the edge up past that point since the carbon has been drawn out of the edge, making the steel it softer.
OTOH, if it's just a chip, just some good old fashioned honing should do.

Thanked: 235Not to worry. With my limited experience I can say the damage is negligable. That will hone out with no problems. I would suggest sending it to one of the hone meisters here, or if you are willing and want to learn, you could try to hone it out yourself.

Heck, I didn't even see what the problem was at first. I was expecting a nasty, rusty, ex-chicken slaughtering tool.... You should see some of the damage Glen or Max can not only undo, but make art out of.
Nice looking blade, what is the make on it?

Thanked: 3795Yes, it's fixable. Back-honing will get it re-aligned and then the edge can be honed to remove the weakened area. Because it's not deep, it can just be honed out. Don't bread-knife it.
If you don't think you can do it, I'd be willing to do it for free.
So, how did you do it?Last edited by Utopian; 06-27-2009 at 05:12 PM. Reason: afterthought

To Jende, It's just lighting. I must have taken fifty shots of this blade trying to get a good shot.
Jende, NDW, BK, thanks, I was worried sick. I'm thinking of sending it to Lynn. He honed it when I bought it.
BK, it's the Dovo ebony spike point. Yes, it's very nice... which is why I almost puked when I did this to it. It's my favorite blade.

Thanked: 3795Yep, it would be free. My signature line explains it. If you're interested, just send me a PM.
Alternatively, you can't go wrong sending it to Lynn. I hear he's pretty good!
