Definitely the world's worst example of a very rare handle....
What do I do with it???

You want to get some Maas on that sharpish.
Just keep watch for a nice blade, of the right dimensions, in need of scales. How are you at rescaling? You may need to send the new blade & scales to one of the resto guys to pair them.
I'd cast a mold from that handle and pour new ones in pretty colors.
See now I envision a hardened weathered tough as nails old ship's captain who kept that on his boat and shaved with it just like that up until recently when he died at sea of a ripe old age. Aarghhh, matey!

I've got a few blades laying around, will see if any fit the profile. Will keep the original with it for reference. Saw a better example online for $700.00...:):)
Recommendation as to who to send it to for repair? I am not mechanically inclined to using sharp power tools on small items.
If you are taking the scales off be very careful I broke a nice set of scales today getting them off a rubbish razor
To my recollection, those lobster scales are sought after by some. They must be more rare than many of the other plastic relief scales that are in abundance, the peac.o.c.k, windmill scenes, nudes, stag, bamboo, corn cob to name a few relief scales that I've owned.

Bin the scales before the lobster starts to nibble at your other blades!
WAIT!!! Do NOT remove that blade from those scales. That is one of the most sought after sets of scales that collectors (mostly not people on this site) look for! I would guess that those scales are worth more with that beat up original blade pinned in them than if you took the blade out. I would honestly put them on eBay with a reserve of however much you'd let them go for. If they don't sell on eBay, email Bill Ellis or PM him over at B&B- he was after a set of those scales last I heard.
I would look for a blade with a battleship etching and surgicully implant it in those scales.Maybe even a Wester Bros. Anchor brand razor would fit snugly,iy has an anchor symbol on the tang.Just a thought.Olivia had a good idea, make a plaster cast and make solid silver scales:eek:.
Thats a hot pour, LOL
There's been someone nice working with a CNC machine
who offered to copy scales like this
and I cannot find the thread right now.
Does anybody know?
Whatever you do with those scales, cast a mold first.
Hey if you are able to cast a mold, I would imagine that you would have a nice set of scales. Love to see the completed work.:)
That is an excellent point. For some odd reason some of the ebay collectors, who I fear have never actually used a straight, seem to prefer the unique scales in garbage blades.
If you want the scales, unpin it.
If you want to preserve the design, I love the idea of making a mold.
If you want money, follow Philadelph's advice.
I always like my lobster with lemon and butter.
Give that blade a little bit longer and it may come out on its own.
I think you lobsters may have tetanus by now...
While making a cast seems like a good idea at first, I am against it. Next thing you know there will be copies flooding the market and destroying the collectible value of those few that exist. Same for selling it on eBay... it would be in China in a day...
Will need to think on it...
Thanks for everyone's comments!!!!!!!
I don't know about anyone else but I think the lobsters are kinda cool. You really don't see many new razors with scales that unique
While we have CNC machines at my workplace, I posted a thread about designing scales in CAD software and using a 3D printer to print the design:
http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...s-printer.html
Had several people say "That's awesome, I can whip something up in CAD" but alas, nobody sent me any files to use. :( If you can draw crustacean scales in CAD, I can print them.
Side-note: why are these scales coveted by collectors? They're flippin' hideous (IMHO). I sent a Morley with the reed-patterned scales out to be rescaled. I've read that the reed pattern is common and the lobster is rare, but still.
Ah ok, now I remember!
Its probably the style alone. Fitting images onto objects goes probably back to some ancient ivory carvings. Hence the color.
I'm with Olivia. Mold 'em. But to your point, and Alex's, I might alter the casts so they're obviously not originals. If you cast em in clear resin, it'd be pretty obvious they weren't original.
You could even mold them as is, complete with the blade, then clean em up and put the original on ebay. Would be an extra step or two to get to your copy blanks, but might be worth it. I'd love a Lobster set. Be willing to help with the molding if you changed your mind.
Ummm.... I guess they are bent.
You'd either have to take them apart and straighten them out
or do it with the mold later.
There is a putty type of silicone. Two parts.
You knead it together and them you have about 5 minutes to play.
That could work.
All you have to do is putting something oily on them before you push them into the putty.
Shoe Cream, floor wax or the like.
(Disclaimer: I'm talking like I've done it already, but its an unfinished project thats hanging around here in fact)
They would be nice in lobster orange acrylic :D

Once you get your lobster scales to look like the ones in this photo, you can then use this recipe: http://straightrazorpalace.com/finer...eam-sauce.html
But first you should follow this recipe: http://straightrazorpalace.com/conve...og-method.html
I have made a deal with a member to trade the lobster for some honing and other considerations.
Thanks again to everyone for all the wonderful suggestions!
Brad
WOW icedog! They cleaned up really well!
schmmoze you best look at this lobster. He wants $700.00 for it.
