Turning stock tends to run in a regular lengths. 6, 12 and 24 inch at 1, 1.5, 2, 3 inch square. 1.5 and 2 inch by 12 will get you around 4 handles depending on how much waste you factor in and how long you like the handle. Woodcraft and Rockler are the two most common suppliers.

If you are going to use wood, make sure you can finish it well, or you'll want stabilized wood.
I think you can find some really good exotics on ebay in small quantities, and usually for very little money. Check to make sure the wood is dry or stabilized though

Thanked: 1Gotta throw a wet towel, tho. The dust from rosewood is NOT good for you. Be sure and at least wear a mask when turning and especially sanding it! That said, I love the stuff! Dream to work, and beeyoutifull to behold.

Thanked: 31The Wood-Database has a great chart on wood allergies and toxicity. A similar chart, if not the same one, is in the Wiki.
