Help! Rust? on gold plating of Bergischer Lowe
Hi guys
My daily shaver to date has been a Dovo Bergischer Lowe with gold plating. I just noticed that there is a considerable amount of what I think is rust on the tang around the pivot pin. I thought I was pretty careful about drying, but apparently I was not. Has anybody seen this on this particular razor? What is the procedure for repairing and preventative maintenance?
Thanks in advance

I have that same razor and notice some rust or corrosion or whatever it is there also. I think the gold is a cheap gold wash and it doesn't provide much protection. Its kind of a catch 22 if you start to polish the metal the gold will easily come off in those areas and it will look terrible or if you do nothing the problem will get worse. Dang those pretty razors their only good for display! I've learned to stray away from them if I'm looking for a razor I'm going to use with any regularity.
You might try a cape cod polishing cloth but be very careful because it will remove the gold rite quick. The thing is to use very light pressure and only where the rust appears to be and only until the rust is gone. After that I'd use liberal amounts of sterol or some other preservative after each use and make sure the razor is dry before storing it away.

Dovo sterol is a good product to use, especially in the pivot area of a modern production razor, like your Bergischer Lowe. It's what Dovo puts on all their new razors. My experience is that it does not have an adverse reaction to modern scale materials. I put a wee drop in that area of all my newer (<30yrs old) razors. I've tested on a couple of older razors with bakelite & celluloid scales and they seem fine, too.
Happy shaving!
