    Default Another Set Of Scales

    Here is my second try at scales these took a lot longer to make that the first set. Had to cut them out of a block of acrylic then file and sanded them very thin (Hard work with just needle files and sand paper) I did them as thin as I dare because I knew that the wedge would be large to get the blade to sit low in the scales like I wanted and I didn’t want them to be to heavy. I made the scale tops the same curve as the razor to make it more pleasing to the eye. The wedge was made out of roofers lead doubled over then hammered into shape. The reasoning behind the use of 2 washers per side was to spread the force of the pin over a larger area so I didn’t crack the scales.

    WoW! They look fantastic! You could tell me Glen had made them & i'd believe you! Pinning looks very good too. I like the stacked washers. Great work!

    Exile;

    Those scales are very handsome and the look of the acrylic really adds to the effect.

    Dare I ask your supply source for the acrylic sheet?

    And did you really grind that blade all the way down to lose the big chip? If so, then "Wow!" you have the right sort of patience. Good on you!!

    I get my acrylic from a local tool shop in Derby UK it is what you use for making pens with it costs £3.99 per slab and I can get 2 sets of scales out of each if I'm careful with the cutting as I have only got a hacksaw at the moment. The only problem that I have is that I can only get it in 5 inch lengths so I can only do razors that have been cut down or are short to start with.

    Well, it is beautiful acrylic, but I fear you are correct about the short length. Five inches is just a tiny bit below what is needed for a full length razor. Too bad (sigh!).
