Thanked: 235Making bone scales
I have been thinking about what materials I could use to make scales that could also be found locally. I started thinking about bone. After all, there are a lot of butcher shops in my area. Does anyone have any experience in making bone scales? The two main types of meat you can buy here is either beef or pork, so it would have to be either pig of cow bone. Is there any special way to cure ( I suppose cook) the bone before it can be worked with? Is there any particular bone which would give better material? I would be going all the way from a bone with meat on it to the finished product. Any tips and advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanked: 31Check out The Bone Room's guide to maceration and The Boone Trading Company's guide to working with ivory and bone. That's all you need to know.
I used a cow's leg bone. I was going to use the Bone Room's suggested method, but a dog stole my bone. After I'd removed as much meat as I could with a knife, I left it in a tree full of fire ants, to remove what was left of the meat (step 1). They were doing a great job along with some maggots until that pack of stray dogs came along.
