Thanked: 125Devcon High Strength 5 Minute Epoxy
Is this a good product to use for finishing wooden scales with epoxy resin?

5 minute epoxy would set up too fast. You need an epoxy that will flow-out and level it self before it starts to harden.
There are other people who work more with epoxy coatings than me I will defer to them to reccomend a brand.
The 5 min epoxy would be a good choice for filling voids/bug bites in scales, but not for clearcoating the surface.

I've used 5 minute epoxy before, but I dilute it with acetone about 50/50 and this increases the set time.
Keep in mind the cheap brands will yellow over time.

Thanked: 125Do you consider Devcom a cheap brand? (it cost me $15...) What other brands would you recommend? Oh, and where could I get some Acetone?

That epoxy is designed for bonding not for finishing. I found some 2 part epoxy resin finish at home depot near the polyurethane. It takes overnight to set and then 72 hours to fully cure and the results are pretty fantastic.

Thanked: 125So, a slow set expoxy resin is the best way to go?

Not epoxy glue, epoxy finish. It will not be by the other epoxy at home depot or lowes. It is specifically designed to finish bar tops, tables, etc.. and will say so on the box. I can post a pic of mine tonight when i get home if you want.
