Finally finished. Genco Forge Mark
So a few of you may remember a few months ago my thread of restoring a 6/8th Genco Forge Mark razor that somehow ended up with a big chip. Link
I finally got around to honing her up after the miraculous recovery, and dang. Shaves just like every other Genco I've owned, which is to say _very_ close and super comfortable. Also, there's a little something extra, probably related to the major process related to the previously mentioned almost-disaster.
This is the most work I've yet put into a restoration. The blade, while not quite glass smooth, polished up quite well. This was an encouraging project for me to put in a little more time on razors that I feel could use a little more gloss.
I ended up leaving the tail of the tang fairly unpolished, as I felt it matched the hammered portion better than to polish it up like the blade.
Here's some pics of the finished, shave-tested wonderfulness.

Looks great. I think you made the right decision about not buffing the monkey tail as much as the blade. Love the hammered tang BTW. Nice recovery from the big chip. Glad it shaves well for you.

Thanked: 20Looking good. I am a long way from restoring a razor. I do get pretty good shaves with my Nabor that I use as my daily razor. Maybe one day.

It's not that hard. I started with razors that only needed some blade cleanup and bevel setting (no chips, frowns etc), and just sanded away till I ran out of patience. If you can find one that has some light pitting and/or patina but a clean (or at least mostly clean) edge, your first restoration is not much more than sanding the blade to your preference, setting the bevel, honing, and maybe tightening the pins a little bit.
This is not to belittle the process, but simply to say that it's not unattainable by most folks.

Thanked: 6Nice job Alex, and a nice save of the blade. You have inspired me to try and rescue my German Crown & Sword blade that cracked as soon as I tried to clean it up. Overhoned. Thin wire edge. But looking at yours, perhaps all is not lost...
Really nice work on this. You have got me thinking...
