Fixing warped Horn Scales (Undream's Edition)
I know this has probably been covered before, and I know it is also in the wiki, but, the one in the wiki requires some crazy stuff including a boiling water pot and half an hour of time...
Heres my "5 minutes to straighter scales" technique, partly from some help in chat from a few friends ... I think it was Kevint?
Who knows, this exact method is probably already somewhere in the forums. I'm too lazy to check right now. Regurgitating info is never bad though, right? plus, I have pictures. Pictures are good.
1) Find yourself some warped horn scales. Thats easy!
2) You're gonna need a paint stirer and a couple little C-clamps. If any of you razor restorers don't have little baby C-clamps, shame on you. They rox0rs your sox0rs.
3) Find your wife's Hair Dryer, and pump that baby to HIGH. Give it 3 minutes...ehh... maybe 5 minutes, with it held about 1" away from the horn, gently going back and forth along the length.
4) After its pretty freeking hot, Quickly remove the C-clamps, and immediately douse the entire scale in COLD water.
5) Wha-La! I only did this set for about 3 minutes, but, it was straight enough for my particular scale set.
Hope u enjoyed.

Hey, that's the exact method I use! It's a really effective way that keeps it all nice & simple. You can often fix them with the blade still in, just by heating & encouraging the bend out & it works for celluloid & plastic too.
It was Max that gave me the tip when I didn't want to unpin a NOS razor with wonky scales & he knows what he's talking about.

Thanked: 125Thanks for the tip Undream
I used the boiling water method and ruined a set of horn scales. Howbeit, i'm pretty sure they were already unusable... I'll remember this technique next time I come across a set of warped horns!

Brad if I could add two things to your technique.
Allow for spring-back. Whenever we bend something like this some allowance should be made for a slight return to pre-bend state. Springback.
Cool, set the piece while in position. whether in a form or hand; hold the piece in position while cooling.

That is a very nice post. I like your method, short and sweet and straight to the point.

Brad's method ought to be in the SRP Wiki if it isn't there already. Too good to get buried in the forum archives.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
