I've built over forty muzzle loading rifles, so I've got some experience at wood finishing.
First, linseed oil as purchased at Home Depot, etc is useless. It needs dryers added. Colonial gunsmiths cooked it and added lead oxide (powdered white lead) to make it dry.
Second, tung oil was the finish used by the US for finishing stocks of M-1 Rifles. It works, but needs time to dry. Several coats are needed.
Third, "Tru-Oil" is a linseed-based finish with dryers that's water resistant and drys glossy. Cut it 50% with turpentine or mineral spirits for the first coat then apply uncut. This would be my choice for razor scales.
Fourth, marine spar varnish, if oil (linseed) based is great. Good luck finding it.I strop my razor with my eyes closed.
