FIRST CUSTOM SCALES!!!
So after toiling all week in my apartment with nothing but a pocket knife, some sandpaper, a hasp, a (claw) hammer, and some beeswax w/ orange oil, my first set of scales is complete and on a Heljestrand blade I bought off of Bassguy.
The wedge basically turned out to be a fiasco, so the blade doesn't quite center on closing, it looks horrible nose on, and there is about 1/4" too much room before the spacer.
But the scales themselves turned out much better than I expected, and I really love the wide brass washers on the walnut. Somehow I feel like the Heljestrand really fits these scales. Sadly the blade is not shave ready, it needs a good honing and that will have to wait, since I spent the rest of my money for the time being on materials and tools, but such is life.
Anyway, sorry for the poor picture quality, I have no real camera so I had to use the one on my computer. But you get the idea

Oh, and I want to thank Glen and Max.
Glen first, for inspiring me to try my hand at this, and for inspiring the design for these scales in particular, I fell in love with them when he posted a similar set on TSD. I just put my own twist on the here.
And also Max, because I feel he does some of the very best work around, all of it with a flair uniquely his. The razor I have that he honed is my go to shaver, and beautiful.
Thank you guys for inspiring me to try my hand at this fine art.

Thanked: 199Simple, and looks good! All in all, I would have to say, for not having all the standard tools, you did a great job! Not to mention, the experience is what counts!
Looking forward to seeing set #2

Unless I feel the need to knock out another set in the next few days (I do have a spare blade...) then set #2 will be going to our very own Obie, on one of his many flea market finds from this week. I'm definitely looking forward to trying new things!
Oh, and I have a ball peen hammer, a vise, and a saw on the way. I also have a proper drill bit now, and progressively fine grade of sand paper from 220 to 1500.
Set #2 should be much nicer.

First Custom Scales
My dear Drew,
You are an artist. Those are striking scales to be proud of. Well done.

Good job man! Just out of curiousity, are you going to school at Clemson? My daughter is a freshman there this year.
