    Default Small nick in blade

I have a straight I would like to rescale since the ones on it are cracked, but while it's apart i'd like to fix the nick in the blade.Since I have no idea what or how to do it nor the materials to fix the nick i'm open to all suggestions. The blade is a 6\8 with the words THE HAMBURG RING etched into it.Any help would be greatly appreciated. In the first pic it looks like a crack below the T but it's not,not quite sure what that is but it's not on the blade now.

It's not the end of the world for that particular razor. It can easily be honed out. Maybe not in 10 minutes but it's repairable.
After the removal of spoken chip and a good hone you will have yourself a very nice shaver.

+1 to both the above to get rid of the chip and have yourself a good shaver.

Regarding scales it depends what you want in terms of material and aesthetics and how much you wana pay. If your gona do it yourself theres a wealth of info here in the wiki on how to do it, materials, finishes etc.

Or you could pay a small fee and have someone like Max (above) or Glen or various other members in the classifieds construct some beautiful scales for you and even restore the blade to a mirror finish.

Your wallet and your imagination are your limits, but its worth it as I'll bet that razor has the potential to outshave even your grandchildren.

I know this isn't exactly constructive, but I just love that the address was stamped into the tang. That's a pretty rare touch.

I'm about to repair an edge with a similar chip. Does anybody recommend using a grit lower than 4k for a quicker job? Also, rather than taping the spine to avoid hone wear, is it feasible/wise to simply hone at such an angle that there is a gap between the spine and the stone until I remove a little metal? I don't want to have to remember which razors were taped and which weren't, and I prefer not to tape. Lastly, how many of you would just breadknife the thing, and how hazardous is this to the blade/hone?

    Thanks.

How is the address normally displayed on the tang on Wade and Butchers, Joseph Rodgers and other 18th C razor cutlers?

To be honest, I've never seen an address more specific than a city, ie Sheffield or Solingen. There you've got what appears to be a house number and street name of the shop where it was made. Pretty cool.

Take a look in the Straight razor data base here, at Joseph Rodgers. I own a couple myself and as youll see, they have an address stamped on the tang, along with a Maltese Cross.

Some other Birmingham, London and Sheffield forged blades have addresses on them too, but I agree they are not as common as basic Solingen or Sheffield stamps without addresses.

    EDIT

I thought you meant it was unusual how words are stamped on the tang as opposed to other methods of inscription!

I would definitely use a stone lower than 4k. Speaking for myself, I would drop down to a coarse DMT and either breadknife the whole of the blade until the chip was gone, or just the toe end, working a slight curve into the toe then concentrating on getting the bevel bak into the toe area and working back up the grit sizes.

As far as addresses on the tang go, a number of Sheffield razors had addresses: M Hunter & son, Talbot Works, Sheffield; John Heiffor, 3 Paradise Square; Joseph Rodgers, 6 Norfolk Street; Mappin & Webb, royal Cutlery Works; C Myers & Sons, Athol Rd.

    A lot of London razors had addresses on the tang: Bayford Cutlery Co, High Road, Leytonstone; Drew & Co, 156 Leadenhall St, EC; F. Armstrong, 162 Fenchurch St, EC; S. H. McKenzie, also at 162 Fenchurch St, EC; J House, 119 King Street, Hammersmith W.; J A Wylie & Co, 62 Holborn Viaduct EC; Jenner & Knewstub, 33 St James's St.; Martin & Co, 63 Grace Church St.; Maurice Viane, 50 Knightsbridge SW1;

Other English makers sometimes put addresses on the tang: Flatters & Garnett, 309 Oxford Rd, Manchester

Some razors form other countries have the address on the tang, too, eg "The Plum" razor has Craig Aitken sole prop. 654 George Street, Sydney on it.

Those are a few I've had and photographed over the years - plenty more, but I don't want to bore anyone too much!

    Regards,
    Neil
