    Thanks Chris.
Sorry to rain on your parade.

You know, I can laugh with it. It won't grow back from crying. I sprout from a long blood line of carpenters and cabinetmakers. My grandfather missed half a pinkie (lengthwise). My uncle misses 3 digits. An uncle of my dad misses a finger. Everyone who grew up among woodworkers knows the stories and the risks. I always feared it might happen to me some day. I hoped my fear would protect me. It did. For 20 years. I was too sleep deprived to work in my wood shop that Friday night. (I wanted to quickly build a paddle strop for a friend, in case you wonder). Sleep deprivation has been an issue in my life ever since I was considered old enough to decide my own bed time. It's a matter of self-discipline. Stumpy reminds me of that now. In the end, he might save me from a heart attack.

    Bart.

Good lessons here...working with power tools is SERIOUS business.

If you can't concentrate, best to step away.

I'm also reminded of an experience I had while working in the food industry.

Our prep guy had quit/not showed up and I volunteered to do the morning prep since we were in dire need. I was out LATE, and didn't actually get any sleep. I made it until about 1pm, and was slicing tomatoes on a meat slicer similar to the one pictured below. I was dead tired, and my concentration started to falter, so I turned the thing off, and went to the MOD and told em that I was falling asleep, and that they would have to make due with what I had done up to that point.

I wasn't about to lose a finger for $5.50/hr. I hate to think of what COULD have happened if I had continued.

Bart, man, I hope you recover soon!

I thought you had to wear stainless mesh gloves when running those things.

This was about 13 years ago...I don't think there was a regulation that you had to wear gloves, but if there was, I certainly didn't know about it, and the managers never said I needed em.
