Thread: Sepiolite

i would try to make a sepiolite scale...the same material used for pipes...
Does anyone know where is possible to find or buy this rock?

I'm not positive it will work well, but if you google "carve your own pipe supplies" lots of places come up that sell it. Assuming you are talking about the white stuff anway (known here as meerschaum)

Yeah, I don't know how well that would work. I had a meerschaum pipe a few years back and the material is great, but it's VERY brittle. If one were to drop his own pipe on the floor it would likely shatter the material. Additionally, the material is incredibly porous and will even stain under the oils from the skin. on the pipes, it is advised not to touch it at all and to use a cloth while smoking from it to keep the oils from the skin from discoloring it. I accidentally touched the pipe once and it left an indelible fingerprint on it...even to the point where you could see the actual print and not just a smudge.

As I recall most of that stuff is imported from Turkey. Yes it is very brittle and very light. Probably not the best scale making material. Try some dealers who sell minerals to rockhounds and mineral collectors.
