Sure. Instead of using a file which, if you're not careful, ends up filing bits off the scales, I use wire cutters like these: - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

I get edges of the cutters between the scales and the head of the pivot pin and simply snip it off...no muss no fuss. I have yet to break scales using this method. Heck, I have yet to even damage a set of scales using this method.

I was really thinking you were going to say a set of jewelry "Flush Cutters" as I have been able to use those on a select few, with very loose scales... But I never thought in a million years you were going to say regular Dykes....
Are you crushing and popping the washer off ??? Have you just been really lucky and had high standing pins ???

Not sure about any crushing or popping....I've certainly not used my method using a bullseye pin. This technique is certainly valuable on any of the standard pins I've come across.

I'll see if I can't get a few photos together later this afternoon and start a new thread for you on the technique.

No problem I think I can try it out, I have about 400 sets of old scales in the shop.... I am just going to have to look at it again though different eyes, I guess,,, Perhaps I should have never tried it on DD scales in the first place...Damn fagile things...

    Not a problem.

I have a very small pair of cutters that I use...it's not even the normal size. The one in the link has a cutting head that is only about 4-5 times larger than the pin itself which certainly makes it easier to get it between those pins and the scales.
