Thanked: 4Bent Tang help
I just started putting my scales on my first restore and the blade is definitely way off center. I tried sanding a little bit off the inside of the scales to true it up a bit but it didnt completely fix the problem. I have heard of people putting washers on one side to true the blade and center it, but this really looks like a half a$$ job to me and was wondering what professional restorers do when they come across a problem like this. Thanks in advance

This has pretty much all the solutions available.
It happens to all of us and sometimes it can be extremely time consuming and frustrating with not always the perfect centering solution.

Thanked: 14I had this same problem when I was working on a DA mod for a Christmas present for my brother. I had already ground it down, and polished it up, and it was the last of all the blades I needed to finish. I only had about 8 hours before needing to leave for my flight, and I couldn't keep the blade from hitting the scales no matter what I did.
Finally, I had to resort to putting it in the vise. When I finally finished, it centered in the scales, but it still went in at an angle. It was like the tang was twisted. In the end, I just left it, but if I had more time, I would have been trying some other methods. I would be interested to find out what to do with a twisted tang, though I hope I don't see another for a long time.
Anyway, here are some photos:
