Thanked: 39Oh man, what a lucky day!
I was visiting an acquaintance yesterday who makes displays for the local museum. He had a bunch of "cut-offs" in a big box that I took interest in, asking what he had in there. He responded "mostly kindling, now"
"Kindling my *ss!" I responded. I asked if I could them have some. He did me one better; quickly cutting two dozen planks 1/8"X2"X6" in seconds flat! He was happy just to get rid of the stuff!
I thanked him profusely. I walked away with cut slabs of: Crosscut Oak (interesting grain patters), Ebony, Teak, Cherry, Rosewood, and Birdseye Maple!
I gotta find some more blades, cuz I just gotta put together a razor for him!

Good for you. I had a similar experience.
I called a friend if mine to see what he was doing on a particular Saturday. He said his uncle was working in a trade show in town and he hadn't seen him in a while so he was going over the the convention center to say hi.. He invited me to go and said we could get into the show free as guests of Uncle Ed. I said sure, why not.
As it turns out the show was for furniture makers. Ed finds old wood and builds very interesting unique tables, lamps, chairs, etc.
I told Ed about my Str8 Razr hobby and my RAD and a week later a box arrived at my door with blanks made of Black Walnut, 1/4 Sawn Sycamore, Cherry, Oak, Redwood and a few others. HAPPY DAY!!!
It pays to be at the right place at the right time and to be nice to people. In a word, Karma.
If you want to trade some of the blanks you got for some of mine, PM me and we'll exchange lists of exactly what we have. Just an idea.
Shave on,
Doug

It's a throw away world these days. I had hardwood flooring professionally installed and I asked what they normally do with all the extra bits they cut off here and there, and the guys told me they just throw them in the garbage. So I asked them to keep all the bits from mine. I've now got a giant rubbermaid 3 foot long container full of planks of Pilang (Brazillian walnut) that I'll be turning into something nice some day.
