Very tough one. Edge is confuses me .Try to hone and check the edge. See you can get clean metal.if yes then it can be saved if not then sorry.

IOW, if the pitting is too deep at the edge every time you hone down to the bottom of the pit you'll have a hole or a chip. It is hard to tell from your photos because they are too close up to see the overall edge but I think you'll be alright. So as has been said, set a bevel, check it with magnification and if it is solid steel sand and restore.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

The pitting on the edge is always going to make it look bad. As you move farther away from the edge the pitting will become more superficial and less of a problem. Hopefully the thickness of the blade will be sufficient enough that the pitting will smooth out before the bevel needs any substantial material to support it. I would hope that you would be able to save it, as it looks to be a pretty nice piece. Good luck!

You should be able to cut a new bevel beyond that muck on the edge but how far you have to go is unknown.
If it loses a lot of width & the edge meets the stabiliser you may need to reshape the heel. If there is no stabiliser you still may run into thickness issues at the heel but hey fort $10, worth the exercise. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
