Stratocaster Test 1/2 Scales
I decided to make test strat scales to see how the heat treated sunburst effect would look with the white plexi pick guard.
Here is the result. The pick guard is not the final shape. I simply made a hand outline and filed it into this shape. I was more concerned with seeing how it looks and how hard it would be to work 1/8" plexi to the 3/64" thickness that is the result.
Overall not too bad, just takes patience filing it down slowly.
I made this test out of scrap purpleheart. These are about 1/8" narrower and mirror image for the body than the would be strat scales. My only concern was for the color combination and the look of the various pieces as put together.
The neck will be canary wood and is the darker yellow as seen in the background. The lighter yellow is yellowheart and I find it to bright and yellow for the neck.
I decided to add brass control knobs and a brass tremolo bar (whammy bar) for more detail. The bar is machined (read filed, at the moment I can only drool over a micro lathe) from 1/16" brass rod. Takes a while but I think it adds to the overall look.
Let me know what you think. Note that the color in the vertical picture on the left is accurate the rest of the pics are a bit off.
