Thread: My Rust Problem - Hard Lesson Learned

I'm new to SRP and rather ignorant to all things dealing with using a straight razor. In an attempt to sterilize my new razor I used a bit of bleach, which began to oxidize the blade immediately. I had no idea that it would do such damage, but rust began to form near instantaneously. After which I came back to this forum and read that bleach is absolutely NOT the way to try to sterilize a carbon steel razor PERIOD, and I do feel like such a fool for not doing my homework on the proper way to do so. I've spent the last several hours desperately trying to research the best possible way to save my razor. It seems metal polish is the immediate solution? I don't have any on hand, but will get some tomorrow. In the meantime I tried WD-40 and using aluminum foil to remove the rust. I can still see spots on my razor blade, and I want it completely removed. Please help me.

MAAS polish and a Q-Tip is the best way to remove marks like this.

MAAS is a very mild polish, so it suits razors. You can also use Flitz if you cant find the other stuff.

Bear in mind that these razors, whilst being sharp, are delicate and the steels they are made from tend to rust fairly easily due to their high carbon nature. You want to use mild products on them, so strong chemicals like bleach are not a good idea..! If you want to sterilise a blade, Barbicide is a better bet.

The MAAS and Q-Tip should remove any marks that the bleach left though.

Also, if the edge got bleach on it, you may need to send the razor to be honed as the bleach will likely have corroded the edge as well.

Hopefully any problems can be quickly and easily rectified though, so no harm done..!
