Best to post a photo of the blade and scales if possible. Is the blade covered with rust where it goes into the scales ? If it is it may be the rot. OTOH, sometimes it is grunge and that can be cleaned. Pound a couple of q-tips flat on the end to where they will fit in between the scales.
I like scrubbing bubbles pump spray and soak the scales with that. I rub the stuff out with the q-tips and a soft toothbrush. I use flat dental floss with metal polish around the pivot. I hear that if it is rot it won't go away but haven't personally ran into one that didn't clean up so maybe I've been lucky so far.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
