Default Cleaning up an eBay razor

    Hi folks,

I'm a newbie and just received a couple of razors that I got on eBay. Before I hone and try to shave with them, I need to clean them up. What's a good way to clean and disinfect these things? There's some scary looking stuff on them.

I use plain old alcohol to disinfect them and MAAS cream to clean and shine them. Good luck

I usually saturate them with WD-40 to take any old oil or gunk off then clean them with soap and water. Then you can inspect them and see what they really look like. Depending on how they look I'll use either Simichrome or Cape Cod Cloths to shine them up. If its more difficult the dremmel will do the job. Usually for the scales soap and water and q tips to get into the small places and the polishing cloths to shine them up. Depending on the scale materials I might use the dremmel to polish them.

Soap and water on the blade, scrubbing and paying CLOSE attention to the sharp edge. From there, you can apply isopropyl alcohol via a Q-tip or cotton ball. For polishing, pickup some MAAS at Wal-Mart. It comes in a small box, located with the kitchen cleaning products like Brasso and such. Not every Wal-Mart appears to carry it. Some guys have found it at Home Depot, or you can order it online. Have some spare cloths, as there will be a lot of black stuff come off Again, watch that sharp edge. I took a head from my electric toothbrush that was worn out and use that to polish... not exactly a dremel but easier than elbow grease.

I also have some blades that need cleaning. In fact more than just cleaning. It would be my suggestion that you get the "STRAIGHT RAZOR RESTORATION" cd by Bill Ellis. He is a member here and is known as URLEEBIRD. Or you could visit his site which is www.billysblades.com. You will soon learn how to clean and more. I am pretty sure that you are looking for more than just sanitary. If I am going to shave and possibly cut myself with a blade, I want much more than just an alcohol wash.

Any special precautions for razors with gold lettering on the side?

Gold wash is sensitive. Even moderate to aggressive polishing will take it off.

Even removing some tarnish with Maas, Flitz or other polishers will noticeably wear out the gold wash.

It is a choice between a tarnished blade or washed out gold.

It is a puma, is it likely to have more durable gold wash (I read what I wrote back and, yes it does sound stupid but I still think its worth asking)
