    Default Peening advice please.

I've a couple of razors ready to peen back together, however at this point I don't have a vice to hold my brass rod. Any advice on how to hold it to peen the first end?

A set of Lineman's pliers, A 5/64in hole drilled in something solid, vise grips, You can do it in the razor but I do not advise it....

A 5/64in hole drilled in any piece of wood helps steady the pliers, and the vise grips...

Drill a small depression in a bit of steel - a hammer-head will do, cut the wire to just a bit longer than you need and file one end flat. Place the unfiled end in the small depression (it will steady the wire - if it is small enough it will stop the end flaring) and gently peen the top while revolving wire with your finger and thumb. It's as easy as that - no vice, grips or pliers necessary. Just make sure not to cut the wire too long or it will bend, and tap it too hard or it will bend.

Once it is mushroomed enough to stop the washer from faling off you can put it in place and peen the other end and the one you did freehand, alternating between the two - keep doing one till its done and the other will go flat, so keep turning it over and peen a bit on each.

If the small depression you drilled was small enough the end of the wire will be shaped to go through the scales as-is, if it has flared a bit just roll the edge on a bit of sandpaper or your grinder.

    Regards,
    Neil
