Thread: Electrochemical Etching

I did a search, and only found a few threads on electrochemical etching.

I've read some mixed reviews about etching, but it's so hard to know if the problems are with the process or with the machines, as there are so many machines out there.

Well, I had some money burning a hole in my pocket, so I did some research and ordered a machine that seemed pretty well regarded on several knife making forums, as well as a machine to make stencils. (I didn't order it just for razors, I have a few other applications for the equipment as well)

The equipment should be here by the end of the week and I'll have some free time over the weekend to experiment. I will keep you posted on my progress.

I'm just curious if any of you have tried doing this type of etching before. If so, what kind of machine did you use, and how were the results? Any tips or tricks?

I freely admit I know nothing about this, but I'd be very interested to read your findings and results!

I'd be very interested to know how you get on, too, and to hear more about the stencils.

I ended up buying a variable regulated electrical supply and using it for both electroplating and etching.

I haven't done much with steel yet, but I have had good results producing leather-stamping dies in copper - instead of stencils I use a laserjet printing onto photographic paper.

It would be great to be able to get hold of some good pre-printed stencils, though - you must tell us how you use/apply them when you get the kit!

what little black box did you end up gettig (does it have both AC and DC )

i mark all my blades electro chem method if you liek i can get the info to where i get my makers mark stencils and electrolite

you can even do a bit of anodizing of Ti with one if it has a DC side

You want a machine that gives the most constant current possible.

Over etching is easily done, you can always under etch and etch more if you feel it's not enough.
