Default Fun With My New Lathe

I got a new mini-lathe about a week ago, and since then, I've been enthusiastically learning the basics of woodturning.

It took some time to learn how to get smooth cuts, but I'm startign to get it all figured out. Working on the lathe is nice and relaxing.

I've been experimenting with various shapes and techniques. I like the way the more complex profiles feel in my hand. The ribs and angles provide for a secure grip. I am fixing the knots with loctite 330 adhesive. It performs better than most epoxies (excepts acraglass), and is easy to work with.

Some handles I just finished up that still need knots (I need to order more). The woods are desert ironwood, Honduras rosewood, Asian ebony, thuya burl, African blackwood, teak, and bois de rose (D. martima).

    Thanks for looking.

    Phillip

Thank you everyone. Turning handles has been a lot of fun this past week. I've been busy this week climbing with a friend of mine, but I always find a way to sneak in an hour or so on the lathe each night. It's a good use for the small pieces of wood that fill up my scrap bin.

I think my friends and family are going to get sick of getting shaving brushes as gifts.

The top right handle is desert ironwood with a little sapwood left intact. It looks very similar to the scales I put on my Genco. The side in the photo is definitely the good side; the back is more brown and less dramatic.
