restore.....
ok I`ve just got a razor from fleaBay, t`was only a cheap one as i plan to play with it to learn to restore/ maintain a razor.
The only real rust it around the pivot, the scales are of good quality. but the razor does have a smile to it. and some heavy hone wear at the toe. see the attached pics.
I`ve trawled through the forum and the wiki and have a plan in mins that i would like to run by you guys...
1)I`ll need to remove the scales to remove the rust,
2) remove the rust with some sandpaper, do i need to do anything else?
Do i need to "fix the smile give the excessive hone wear as it will just come back or can i hone it as it is?
I`ve been playing with the razor on a c12k hone for the last few hours and the blade does seem to be coming sharp again.
I would really like some advice about how to deal with the blade, there is no rust on the blade apart from one slight dent in the spine.
do i need to straighten the edge out or could it be left as it is?

I'm not a workshop wizard, but I think it's safe to consider waiting to hone the razor until you've finished the rest of the restoration you're planning
good luck!Find me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage

You can do a pretty good job of cleaning the rust without un-pinning the razor. You can do even a better job by un-pinning and getting 100% of the rust. If it were mine I would not unpin I would clean up between the scales as good as I could. It just depends on what you want.
Smiles are good, the shape of the blade looks great to me.
I think that it will take an awfully long time using a C12k that is unless it is already shaving sharp. The C12k is most effective at making a shave ready razor shave a little better, it is not too good at non-shaving razor shave-ready.

I would

I would just clean the tang up with sandpaper to about 400-2K grit, buff if you have a buffer & repin.

I'd leave the smile on the blade.
I agree with Spazola on not honing before restoring & a 12K stone is for polishing an edge, not sharpening. Sure, it removes material & you would eventually get it there (like this time in 2011), but you would be using up a lot of your time and un-needed wear on your hone.
Looks like a very good candidate to restore, best of luck & enjoy the journey!!Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
