Default sanding/polishing over golden blade detail

    hey guys,
I'm working on a blade I just picked up; it's my first time with one that has detail on the face. It's a Boker with the King Cutlery thing and I'm concerned about sanding it off. Anyone know if it's ok to put a 1500 micromesh to it?

If it's frosting then you will probably lose that with abrasives. If it's stamping (actually etched or engraved into the metal) then you wont' lose it with light finishing sanding like you're doing with 1500 grit.

    thanks,
it looks like a combination of both. the text is stamped and then a larger crest is frosted on top of this. the stamped side isn't really all that messy; I might be able to carefully polish around the frosting.

King Cutter Gold etch will come right off in fact Flitz will turn it grey... IME

Even just good tape will pull some off...

Pretty much if it is on the face of the blade it will not last, if it is below the face of the blade it might last... And if it is super valuable you don't stand a chance of it lasting

Hey Glen, how does the tumbler method work with gold plating on the blade? Kind of figured it would come off as well, but wanted to ask for mental notes.

Hit and Miss with the gold part...
But so far IME YMMV yada yada yada it will leave the actual etch there, so you at least still have the name/brand etc: on it...

In a recent post a member sent a couple of blades over to Revisor to have the gold redone. One of them was a Puma Gold and both looked really good when he got them back and posted photos. Probably cost a bunch for the service though.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I can imagine, I'm a cheapskate though so the shipping cost alone would gag me. my first try is going to be simply avoiding the area while I polish around it. it will probably sit for awhile anyway as the scales need replacing and there is no place local to get rod or micro-bolts
