Thanked: 480Sticky Situation?
Was just about to sharpen up a Schmachtenberg I picked up off the bay a while back, and the scales came apart. (pinned on one end, glued on the other)
Does anybody know what kind of glue was used to put this type of scale together? hide glue? or similar furniture glues?
What would be the best bet for reassembly? I can imagine that some glues work better on Bakelite or celluloid than others, and some might become a nightmare if there was ever a desire to seperate the halves again.
Thoughts?

I have used Crazy Glue with success for gluing the wedge end of scales. I don't know if it's the best, but it's worked for me. Clean and rough up the surfaces you want to glue first, if you can.

They often used hide glue for this. You could probably just soak the tip in warm water for a few minutes to re-soften the glue, then allign and hold it all together with a clothes pin to dry and set. If that doesn't work, use something waterproof that doesn't foam like Titebond 3 or 5 minute epoxy (sparingly).
I would discourage the use of CA (superglue) since mistakes can be difficult to correct.
Same goes for urethane glues (gorilla glue is a popular brand). They are strong and waterproof, but run and foam a lot.

You can use araldite for things like this. Evostik is a little more rubbery when it dries, but araldite dries rock hard and very solid.
They did an advert in the 80's where they glued a car to a billboard and then rested another car on top of it, and the araldite held it on..!
Heres a pic.
