    Default My First Straight....a Bengall.

Hey, I don't even know if I've posted anything before, but I love the forums here, there's a ton of information. I've finally made the leap from DE to Straight Edge razors, although I have yet to actually use one.

I found an old Bengall at an antique shop recently, and it looks like it's in decent condition (especially when compared to some other restorations here!), but I'm wondering if I can get a second, third, fourth, 28th opinion on this one as I'm not really sure if I should be sanding it, or just polishing and then honing.

It's too bad some of the engraving has worn off, from what I've read, these are pretty good razors and I was lucky to dig this out of a pile of blades from Pakistan. So any tips or pointers would be great for getting this blade closer to working condition!

    Thanks a ton.

Looks like it'll be a shaver once honed. I'd recommend that as a first order of business... send it out to a pro from the forum and get it honed up... IMHO I wouldn't worry about shining it up too much (beyond a quick polishing with maas), it's in pretty good shape as is.

I've cleaned the razor just with a mild soap and when I got between the scales, I noticed that the number 284 is imprinted on the inner edge of both scales. I'm assuming that's just some identification for parts, and not a limited edition piece worth $25,000.....I can dream.

That razor is in pretty darn good shape just as it is. I would not touch it with sandpaper. Maybe a little polish to get some of the light tarnish off and a good honing. I have a bengall and it's a good shaver.

The 284 is a model or part number more than likely. What you have is a good razor that, IMO, needs cleaned up via metal polish (this is usually what we mean by "cleaning it up") & sent out to be honed. You can contact many who are offering their services in the classified section. Contact one via PM and send it off & get to shaving!

Polish it, hone it, shave with it, and enjoy it!! Great find by the way...
