    Default Bent razors...

    FARKING NUTZ.....

Ok got that off my chest...

I just started/finished work on a "Cosmo" razor that has never been honed. So I cleaned it up and started putting on some temp scales (dog ugly buggers) so I could hone it and see about it's first shave... Ya that was the plan... Until it hit the stones... Well now I see why it was a bear to get into the scales.....

I did one pass on each side to see where the bevel was and looked at the spine... WTF??? Ok one more and go slow, feel for the blade to be level... Same thing ARRGGHH!!!! Shiny front and shiny back, dull in the middle... Other side the reverse... ARRGGHH!!! Right after the tang, where the blade begins the blade sort of turns left...

Well no way this is going to be fun to hone but I'm going to set the bevel as best I can and have uneven spine wear I guess... At least the bend is not to crazy but it's there if you look...

Try tipping the blade slightly with the toe up while honing so it is working more off the edge of the hone and not flat on it. Lay the blade flat after you pass the middle of the blade so the middle and toe are flat on the hone. You will be able to get even hone wear and bevel that way.

    Good luck

What Joe said, also if you have a thin hone, or turn a thicker one on edge it might be effective for the concave side.

lol that was my first thought, the sides of the hone. See if you follow me here... If I use the narrow hones/sides I should end up with even spine wear but uneven bevels... Mmm ok why is that thought hurting my head... this would probably hurt less if it was a flat spine instead of a smiler...

Ok getting out the bricks and flattening the sides (again). Before I got my current stones I used the sides of my kitchen knife stones

jsut get a vice and a small pipe and bend the bugger (or break it )

it might move a bit you couls always blue the tang and keep the ege in water and watch the color walk up the spine and lightly bend while hot then water cool no harm no problem

I have bent and or straightened tattoo machine frames by putting them in a vise and shimming one side and the other in such away that when more pressure is applied I got the bend I wanted. I would've never thought to try it with a blade but I guess it is malleable to some extent.

I just finished sharpening a blade like this. Maybe there are some old seconds out there. Mine is a Crownshaw liverpool.

laying the spine on a straight edge both sides of mine are identical the spine touches at the toe and heel with just a hint of light peeking through. Flat and straight enough imho.

The bevel is where the warp is.

Is that what you have? The left turn should not cause that trouble in and of itself _ I have one of those too: a reground Lisbon. It feels a little weird on the hone but the bevel is on the level

    LOL thanks Butch

I'll play with it tonight, the edge seems ok but the spine is out there. I'll get pics and such...

Ok I officially hate bent razors

Day two, still on the 1200 King, sadly my lowest thin stone... Hitting the hardware store to see if they have others...

Interesting putting an new edge on a razor that has not had any hone wear at all. The spine was quite sharp where we are used to it being flat, I had to hone that down till it was smooth enough to tape for bevel setting. That felt really weird on the stones, not something I'm used to

I'm now about a hairs width from the edge now and it's feeling pretty good on the 1200 now. Due to it's issues this blade is going into my rotation should it get to and stay shave ready. I wouldn't feel right trying to sell it... So the crap scales stay on it and we shall see what it's future has in store...
