Thanked: 6Wedge help
Hello all,
attempting my first re-scale to get put on my grandfather's blade. The blade itself is in very good condition but the scales literally broke right apart with little effort. There was also no wedge. Now the scale shaping went very well but I'm having trouble with where/how to start the wedge in regards of thickness. Should I be trying to match the width of the spine at the thickest point of the taper or thereabouts? Also length of wedge?
Thanks in advance

Thanked: 6I've seen those and I'm sure I'm just not reading it right. But I'm having a trouble seeing what the thickness of the material should be spanning (between)the scales. And since there was no wedge to reference, it's doubly hard. Sorry if it's frustratingly simple and as I said I'm not getting it.

05-11-2010, 09:42 PM #6As a general rule, you want the thickest part of the wedge to be the same thickness as the part of the blade you want to have sitting on the scales. Too thin and the blade doesn't go far enough in, too thick and it goes too deep or right through.
The angle should be such that the bowed scales do not rub much (or at all) against the tang when the blade is closed.
Hope this helps.
