DE "straight razor"
Don't really know what to call these contraptions since, as far as I know(which is not a lot on the subject), shavette is an actual brand. I was also uncertain as which forum was the most fitting, but this is where I ended up.
This is the type of item I'm referring to.
edit: Found another picture that shows the item better
It seems that the weakest part of the construction is the bar that clamps down to secure the parts.
My plan was to have a custom handle made for one as a present for my brother.
But since I have no first hand knowledge of these types of "razors" I have no idea if the metal part of the construction is flimsy or not. I'm hoping someone here knows.
If it is I'm wondering if anyone here apt at working with metal could tell me how reasonable it would be to copy the construction, but in a more sturdy way, compared to making a straight razor (ultimately I realise that I would have to deliberate with the person who is going to actually make the item as he is the only one who can really tell, but any guesses are appreciated).Last edited by Chady; 06-07-2010 at 07:34 AM.

I take it that the shavette pictured is not the same one you want to buy for your brother. That one has the very similar markings to a Ern Crown and Sword. But, to answer your main question, any one of the craftsmen who advertise on this site could easily make replacement scales for you. The configuration of the shavette is just like an ordinary razor and wouldn't pose any problem. The clamping piece that hinges to the spine does look flimsy, but once it is locked down and holding the blade in the razor it is secure and there isn't any real stress being put on that part. Take a look at some of the photos in the "Custom Built and Restorations" section or in the "Member Sales (classifieds)" section under "Member Services" to see which of these artisan's work appeals to you and contact them about making some scales.

Thanked: 2Shavette
I have one of these as my "dont-care-if-I-break-it" razor and they arent too bad when your on the road and don't want to risk losing a decent set.
The catch is flimsy, but when it's clamped down, the blade doesnt move and it's solid enough. If you buy them on amazon, they usually come with 100+ blades to get you started.
