Default What kind of hone is this?

I found this old hone at an antique store. It was covered with oil and dirt, but cleaned up nicely with soap and a scrub brush. I would compare the smoothness of the stone too a fine finishing barber hone. The dimensions are L8" X W 1 3/4" X D 1"

kinda looks like the yellow coticle in the thiers video that they use at the end. But also looks like it has seen better days.

    Glen,
Look like a Coticule to me as well. Is it wet in the photo? The yellow color looks very intense as if it is either wet or oily.

It will be a fine hone. You should lap it to be sure the surface is flat. I start with 150 grit wet industrial paper then finish with 320. Lap just enough that the surface is flat with the 150 then switch to the 320 until all is smooth.

In use just a light splash of water is all that is needed. Since the belgians are not porous they do not need soaking.

    Nice find.

It is dry in the photo. Like I had mentioned it was extremely dirty, so when I do lap it the color should even be brighter. I will take additional photos after it has been worked on. I just wanted too see if you guys could ID it.

    Thanks,
    Glen

    Glen,
I have found a few older whetstones were people have used oil on this instead of water inthe past. I most cases the stone will still work fine, especially in the case of a non-porous stone like this were it does not rely on being soaked. Oil embedded in a stone like a Norton could be an issue though.

A quick way to tell for sure on you stone is to take a peek through your radio shack microscope at 100x. You should be able to see the crystaline structure and the tiny red garnets in the stone. A manmade stone will look very different.

Tony, not sure what the crystaline structure is supposed too look like, but the tiny red garnets are imbedded in the peanut brittle colored stone. I see where these stones are rated at 8000 grit, and one this size would cost around $100. Nice thing is the one inch thickness will make it easy to hone without loosing fingers.

    Thanks for you information.

Here is the url to the video. It has been posted in the forum for a while just gets overlooked. I only ran across it while I was starting out maybe a month ago. It was posted by Threeputt on 12-28-2005 as cool theirs-issard video. The stone is at 3min 8sec in the video.

Keaton, that hone sure does look like the one in the video. Pretty interesting too see how fast they work that strop.

    Thanks, Glen
