Razor Blades
Howdy all,
Hope you all have had great shaves and days so far.
I had a bit of a odd question that i could use some help on.
A friend of mine who does is own carpentry and other fancy stuff recently saw my straights and decided he wanted to try to build his own scales for a nice blade.
I know most of you guys would buy a decent blade off of ebay and fix it up yourself but here is where i need your help. He saw the le grelot that i ordered and now he wants one too. But like i said he wants to make his own scales.
Does anyone know if any vendors are willing to sell just the blades or is this idea just too crazy?

I doubt that the new manufacturers will be willing to sell you just a blade by itself. If he's determined that he wants a new manufacture, get something like a base model razor with some cheaper scales that either you or he could use later on.
A more likely bet is to find a nice blade in junk scales and you have your project ready after a rescale and honing.

Seriously doubt that you will find a vendor who can sell a production razor without scales
If at all possible you may have to pay extra to remove the scales(wich you still pay for)
custom makers may supply you with blade only if you (and they) wish, but the price range is....well probably a bit much for a starting customizer/restorer

Customs you can get that way. My Livi was ordered without scales, I would imagine Chandler, Williams, etc... would do it as well but that is a lot of $$ to spend for a test, not to mention the wait. Scales only add a few dollars to the price of a razor. Your typical plastic scales that come on the likes of a Dovo to TI may cost all of $5.

Most razors like the Grelot will come with the basic plastic scales all the way up to the horn and wood choices. Basically just buy the cheapest version with the plastic scales. At that price point you're mostly only paying for the blade only.
Same with some of the NOS razors that sometimes show up like the Friodurs. They find a stash of blanks and they get fitted with the cheapest plastic scales. Same story. You pay mostly for the blade. Most people remove the scales anyways for a replacement by themselves or someone else.

Me personally I'm aces with a blade and scales.
Lol I just have to try and convince my friend not to do anything stupid and waste lots of money on a test.
Not to mention the possibility of ruining a le grelot blade!!
