Staining on a new Dovo
I've got a 5/8 Dovo Special that has picked up a greenish patina or stain on the back side (mostly), a bit along the spine, and one small spot on the front just above the gold wash. I think discoloration is from a liquid styptic, wich is green, that I used several days ago to close a nick so I could finish shaving.
So: would the standard silver polish we have in the house remove the stain without damaging the finish? Would it be too harsh, or not enough to be effective? And I'm assuming I'd need to be ultra-careful near the gold wash--using a q-tip or something like that?"If you ever get the pipes in good chune, your troubles have just begun."--Seamus Ennis

Yes, regular metal polish should work (e.g. Maas, Flitz, etc.) and yes, keep it away from the gold wash as that stuff is easily removed.

Try a cleaner first rather than a polish since they won't be abrasive on it. I've used those stainless steel wipes on my Dovo and the gold was fine even going over it a few times. The polish takes the gold wash off very fast even if you go over it lightly. Even windex has worked for me, just coat it with oil after. Also, unless you know what the results will be, try it on an old razor or somewhere not easily noticed on the razor like the underside of the tang. That way you'll know how it will react to the metal.

Metal polish on a Q-Tip should do the trick. You can get some from your auto supply store, or you can get Simichrome from your Harley dealer. Watch the gold as these polishes will pull that gold right off the blade. Make sure you oil your blades every time you finish your shave.

Thanks for the input, guys! I hadn't seen most of your responses last night. I went ahead with the silver polish and it worked pretty well. I was able to keep away from the gold wash on the front of blade by using a Q-tip to take up just a little polish and rub carefully on the stain itself. The spine and the front look completely cleaned up. On the back, I seem to see a very faint shadow where the much more noticeable green stain originally was but this is a big improvement.
I'm not familiar with stainless steel wipes. Since this is a carbon steel blade, would those be okay to use? Also, where would those be found? Auto parts stores?"If you ever get the pipes in good chune, your troubles have just begun."--Seamus Ennis
